Introduction

They - is a project by me Vilem Novak, done mainly during 2011 and 2012. It has several outcomes - a movie, exhibition, and interactive application. This page was done mainly to show this work to people on-line and to connect these outcomes together.

In the animated movie, the possibilities of animation generated by the evolutionary process were explored. Main interest was on the perception of this outcome - will we see what happens between those beings? Is there some relationships, emotions, intents? If we see them we can be almost sure - these feelings are inside of us and we just projected them on the moving picture. It's like a moving Rohrschach test. The shapes and colors have been brought to minimum, the projection space where diversity remained is motion.

The evolutionary process was inspired by the work of Karl Sims, a scientist and artist who was the first to simulate evolutionary processes with physical simulation of virtual creatures. This work can also be seen as a tribute to his pioneering work. The visual side of the project is very similar to his original images.
